New Haven Reads
EIN: 76-0807330 · New Haven, CT
Our Story
New Haven Reads began in 2001 when Christine Alexander initiated a citywide literacy initiative at the request of New Haven’s mayor. Since then, the organization has supported over 7,000 students and distributed more than 2.5 million books back into the community, thanks to the dedication of over 6,000 volunteers.
Impact
New Haven Reads increases literacy skills among children by providing tailored one-on-one after-school tutoring, educational family support, and a community book bank—all at no cost to participants. The tutoring program serves over 350 children weekly at four locations, while the Book Bank distributed approximately 75,000 free books last year.
