Our Story

Richmond Shakespeare has a rich history that began with the founding of Encore! Theatre, Inc. in 1985. The organization has evolved significantly, hosting the first Richmond Shakespeare Festival in 1998 and officially adopting the name Richmond Shakespeare in 2006. A pivotal merger with Henley Street Theatre in 2013 unified the mission to produce quality theatre grounded in the classics. During the pandemic, the organization returned to its original name to strengthen connections with audiences.
