Our Story

Founded in 1980 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Rice Bowls is a dedicated non-profit organization committed to feeding orphaned children in the name of Christ. The journey began when Dr. Alastair Walker witnessed the devastating effects of world hunger during his travels to developing countries. Inspired to take action, he, along with his church community, created a simple yet impactful solution: a plastic rice bowl coin bank. This design serves as a constant reminder of the dietary staple that is rice and the children who rely on it for sustenance.

Our Mission

Since its incorporation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 1985, Rice Bowls has evolved to partner with 58 faith-based children's homes across 9 countries, providing 100% of the food for the children in their care. The organization has raised tens of millions of dollars to combat world hunger, ensuring that these children receive the nourishment they need to thrive.
