Founded in 1972, Persad Center is the nation’s second oldest licensed mental health center dedicated to serving the LGBTQ+ community. Established in response to the need for specialized, nondiscriminatory services, it emerged from an underground Pittsburgh gay hotline. The founders, Dr. James Huggins and Randal Forrester, envisioned a safe, non-judgmental space for mental health support, encapsulated in the name 'Persad', merging 'personal' and 'adjustment'.
Persad Center has delivered over 12,000 hours of therapy, assisted more than 875 individuals through its food pantry, and facilitated social bonding activities for over 100 seniors, showcasing its profound impact on the LGBTQ+ community.
