About NAMI Central Iowa

In the 1970s, a group of dedicated parents in Central Iowa came together to support one another as they faced the challenges of having adult children living with schizophrenia. At a time when mental illness was misunderstood and stigmatized, these pioneers, including Marge and Milt Allison and Lucy Duitscher, recognized the need for education and advocacy. In 1979, they founded NAMI Central Iowa, embracing the mission to educate, support, and advocate for individuals affected by mental illness.

Our Journey

From its humble beginnings, NAMI Central Iowa has grown into a vital resource for families and individuals living with mental health challenges. The organization began offering educational programs and support groups, and soon expanded its reach by advocating for the needs of those affected by mental illness at local and state levels. In the 1990s, NAMI Central Iowa hired its first Executive Director, Frederica Zuerner, marking a significant step in its development.

As the years progressed, NAMI Central Iowa became increasingly involved with other organizations dedicated to mental health, fostering collaboration and communication that remains essential today. The introduction of the NAMI Connection Peer Support Group provided a platform for individuals living with mental illness to share their experiences and support one another.

Creating a Wellness Center

In 2007, the organization took a bold step towards enhancing its services by establishing a Mental Health Wellness Center in Ames. Inspired by successful models from other NAMI affiliates, NAMI Central Iowa launched art and writing classes, support groups, and various wellness activities. The center has been a beacon of hope, open every weekday afternoon, and has positively impacted the lives of many individuals in the community.
