Our Story

Lighthouse of Oakland County was formed in 2019 through the merger of two dedicated organizations: Lighthouse of Oakland County and South Oakland Shelter. With roots dating back to 1972, Lighthouse began as a grassroots effort by volunteers providing food and clothing from a local church. South Oakland Shelter, established in 1985, was born from the compassion of seven religious congregations. Together, they have created a powerful force for good, offering a range of direct services including food, shelter, rental and utility assistance, and crisis referrals.

Impact in the Community

With over 80 years of combined experience, Lighthouse serves thousands of children and adults in Oakland County. In 2022 alone, 207 households benefited from various housing programs, including 62 families in the Rapid Re-Housing Program. Lighthouse is committed to building equitable communities and alleviating poverty through meaningful partnerships and services tailored to the unique needs of individuals and families.
