The Kansas Land Trust was founded in 1990 in response to the plowing of Elkins Prairie, a significant natural area. This pivotal moment inspired community members to establish a legal framework for protecting Kansas's unique landscapes through voluntary conservation agreements with landowners.

KLT has successfully preserved over 40,000 acres across 81 properties in Kansas, enhancing biodiversity and protecting water quality while providing public access to natural spaces.
