Our Story

Founded in 2015 by KJ Baysa and Isabella Ellaheh Hughes, Hawai‘i Contemporary, formerly known as the Honolulu Biennial Foundation, aims to connect communities through contemporary art across the Hawaiian Islands. The organization has successfully hosted multiple exhibitions, including the inaugural Honolulu Biennial in 2017, evolving into a triennial format that showcases over 130 artists and art collectives.

Impact

Hawai‘i Contemporary has significantly enriched the arts ecosystem in Hawai‘i, welcoming over 100,000 visitors to its exhibitions and providing year-round public programming that engages the community in contemporary art.
