Founded in Alexandria, Virginia, Heard began as a writing program in 2016, initially called "Sharing Our Stories." The organization quickly recognized the need to bring artistic expression directly to those in need, forming partnerships with local nonprofits and government organizations to create tailored arts programs.

In 2023, Heard conducted 293 classes, reaching 2,537 individuals, showcasing a significant increase in participation and community impact. The organization has successfully adapted to challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, by transitioning to virtual classes, ensuring continued support for its clients.
