About the Foundation for Religious Literacy

The Foundation for Religious Literacy (TFRL) was established by H. Bruce McEver, who recognized the urgent need for religious understanding in a world often marred by conflict. Following the loss of his wife, Bruce's commitment to his Christian faith and curiosity about other traditions led him to Harvard Divinity School, where he collaborated with esteemed theologian Ronald F. Thiemann. Together, they launched the Business Across Religious Traditions (BART) program, bridging the gap between academia and business to foster respect for diverse faiths.

In 2012, TFRL convened its inaugural Religious Literacy Roundtable, uniting practitioners dedicated to enhancing religious literacy. This initiative sparked numerous projects aimed at promoting understanding across various sectors, including business, education, and politics. Despite the passing of Dr. Thiemann, Bruce continues to lead the Foundation, supported by a growing network of leaders committed to this vital cause.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, TFRL partnered with 1791 Delegates to create ReligionAndPublicLife.org, a social learning community designed to facilitate discussions on the role of religion in public life. This innovative platform exemplifies the Foundation's commitment to fostering interreligious literacy and understanding.
