Our Story
Shelterhouse was established in 1976 by a dedicated group of citizens who recognized the urgent need for safe spaces for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Initially offering temporary shelter in volunteers' homes, Shelterhouse has evolved over the decades to provide comprehensive support services. In 1980, the first client services center was opened, offering shelter, crisis counseling, advocacy, and education. The organization has expanded its facilities and services, including the opening of a resale shop in 2013, which funds operations through the sale of gently used items. In 2015, Shelterhouse received a prestigious Blueprint for Safety grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, and in 2020, a new facility was launched, tripling shelter capacity and enhancing services with an in-house SANE suite.
