About Antaeus Theatre Company

Founded in 1991, Antaeus Theatre Company emerged from the vision of Co-Artistic Directors Dakin Matthews and Lillian Groag, who believed that a world-class classical ensemble could flourish in Los Angeles, a city dominated by the entertainment industry. With a dedicated group of 30 members, Antaeus began its journey by meeting weekly to read, study, and rehearse timeless classical plays.

Over the past three decades, Antaeus has built a stellar reputation as a leader in the intimate theater community of Los Angeles. The company relocated to North Hollywood in 1995 and became a non-profit organization in 1996. In 2002, the Antaeus Academy was established to provide classical training for artists from diverse backgrounds, further expanding its reach and impact.

In 2019, Nike Doukas was appointed as the sole Artistic Director, ushering in a new era of artistic excellence and stability. Antaeus continues to innovate with initiatives like the NEXT Commissions and New Classics Initiative, supporting new plays inspired by classical works.
