Transforming Healthcare in the Sacred Valley

In January 2010, Keri Baker, a dedicated Registered Nurse, arrived in Ollantaytambo, Peru, with a vision to improve health outcomes for local communities. Initially volunteering with another nonprofit, Keri quickly recognized the pressing health needs of the region. Her journey began with clinical placements for medical volunteers and public health classes, but it soon evolved into something much greater.

After witnessing the struggles of a young woman unable to access proper medical care, Keri was inspired to create a mobile health clinic. This initiative, launched in 2011 with the help of physician Mark Willcox, provided essential healthcare services to remote communities. The success of their mobile clinic prompted local government to establish its own, further validating the need for accessible healthcare.

In collaboration with co-founders Sarah FitzGerald and Emily Groves, Sacred Valley Health was born. The organization focuses on a sustainable community health worker program, training local women—known as promotoras—to deliver culturally competent health education and services. This model not only empowers women but also strengthens entire communities.

Impacting Lives Through Education and Support

Since its inception, Sacred Valley Health has made significant strides in improving health outcomes. A total of 58 promotoras have been trained, providing education and support to over 7,105 pregnant women and new mothers. Additionally, 1,182 community members have received vital health education, and 66 children have been evaluated for stunting and malnutrition.
